A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Pack hunters: bred to hunt foxes in large packs alongside riders on horseback, they are sociable with other dogs and have great stamina.
  • Needs room to run: their endurance makes them a poor fit for apartment life; they need lots of daily exercise.
  • Led by the nose: once on a scent they may ignore calls, so a secure fence and leash are important.
  • A melodious voice: they have a loud, musical bay that carries a long way.
  • Easy coat: the short, hard coat needs only occasional brushing.

Getting out with a English Foxhound

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
