A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.
Good to know
- French guardian: an ancient mastiff from France, used historically as a guard dog, they remain watchful protectors of home and family.
- Drool alert: their loose lips and jowls mean plenty of drool, so keep a towel handy.
- Train early: they can be stubborn, and their size makes early socialization and consistent training essential.
- Heat-sensitive: their short muzzle makes it harder for them to cool down, so keep exercise to cooler times and avoid hot weather.
- Short, easy coat: the short coat needs only occasional brushing, though facial wrinkles should be kept clean.
Getting out with a Dogue de Bordeaux
They're happy with shorter, easy walks. Keep outings gentle in the heat.
