Good to know
- Built to protect: developed in Germany by a tax collector who wanted a guard dog, they are loyal, alert and protective of their family.
- Highly trainable: smart and eager to work, they learn quickly and need regular training and mental challenges as well as physical exercise.
- Needs activity: an energetic, athletic breed that needs daily vigorous exercise to stay calm at home.
- Low-maintenance coat: the short, sleek coat needs only occasional brushing.
- Socialize early: early socialization helps them grow into confident, well-mannered adults.
Getting out with a Doberman Pinscher
They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
Common health considerations
Inherited conditions to ask your vet about
- Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)
- Von Willebrand's disease
- Hip dysplasia
- Wobbler syndrome (cervical vertebral instability)
Common issues
- Heart disease
- Bleeding disorders
- Hypothyroidism
Bloat (GDV) risk: high. A swollen belly with retching but nothing coming up is an emergency: go to a vet straight away.
Not every Doberman Pinscher will have these. Good breeders screen for inherited conditions, and your vet can advise on testing and check-ups.
