A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.
Good to know
- Badger hunters: bred in Germany to follow badgers into their dens, many still love to dig and burrow, including under blankets.
- Big bark: their loud bark is out of proportion to their size, which makes them keen watchdogs.
- Independent thinkers: bred to work on their own underground, they can be stubborn, so patient, reward-based training works best.
- Three coats: smooth, wirehaired and longhaired Dachshunds each need different grooming, from a quick wipe to regular brushing and stripping.
- Prey drive: they may chase small animals, so a leash or secure fence is wise.
Getting out with a Dachshund
Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
