A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Waterproof curls: a coat of tight, crisp curls protects them from water and brush while retrieving waterfowl and upland game.
  • Easy, unusual coat care: the curls need little grooming, and brushing tends to make them frizz, so occasional wetting and trimming are usually enough.
  • Slow to grow up: they can stay puppyish for a long time, so patience and consistent training pay off.
  • Active worker: an energetic hunting dog, they need plenty of daily exercise and enjoy swimming and retrieving.
  • Reserved with strangers: often more aloof with new people than other retrievers, though affectionate with their family.

Getting out with a Curly-Coated Retriever

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
