A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Sicilian rabbit hunter: bred around Mount Etna to hunt rabbits over rough volcanic ground, using a keen nose and sharp hearing as well as sight.
  • Made for heat: centuries of hunting under the Sicilian sun shaped a lean, thin-skinned hound that copes well in warm weather.
  • Strong prey drive: they are quick and athletic, so a secure fence and leash outdoors are wise around small animals.
  • Easy coat: the short, fine coat needs only occasional brushing.
  • Gentle at home: affectionate and mild-mannered with family, and generally easier to train than many sighthounds.

Getting out with a Cirneco dell'Etna

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
