A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Aloof and dignified: often described as cat-like, Chows are devoted to their family but reserved with strangers and not always keen on being fussed over.
  • Start early: their independent, stubborn streak means early socialization and calm, consistent training are essential.
  • Heavy coat care: rough or smooth, the dense double coat sheds and needs regular brushing, with extra work during seasonal sheds.
  • Keep them cool: that thick coat makes hot weather hard on them, so they need shade, cool spaces and exercise in the cooler parts of the day.
  • Blue-black tongue: their blue-black tongue is a hallmark of the breed.

Getting out with a Chow Chow

They're happy with shorter, easy walks. Keep outings gentle in the heat.
