A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Ancient guardian: bred in China as an all-purpose farm dog for guarding, hunting and herding, they remain loyal to family and naturally aloof with strangers.
  • Socialize early: their independent, protective nature means early socialization and consistent training matter a great deal.
  • A harsh "horse coat": the short coat feels rough and needs only occasional brushing, though the skin folds should be kept clean and dry.
  • Blue-black tongue: like the Chow Chow, they have a distinctive blue-black tongue.
  • Naturally tidy: they tend to be clean dogs and are often easy to housetrain.

Getting out with a Chinese Shar-Pei

They're happy with shorter, easy walks. Keep outings gentle in the heat.
