A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.
Good to know
- Big attitude, small body: they are alert and confident, often bonding closely with one person and acting as a vocal little watchdog.
- Feels the cold: their small size means they lose heat quickly, so many need a sweater or coat in chilly weather.
- Two coat types: smooth-coated Chihuahuas need only occasional brushing, while long-coated ones need brushing about weekly; both shed.
- Careful with small kids: their tiny frame can be hurt by rough handling, so they suit homes where children are gentle and supervised.
Getting out with a Chihuahua
Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
Common health considerations

- Patellar luxation
- Heart disease
- Dental disease
- Hydrocephalus
Common issues
- Dental problems
- Hypoglycemia
- Tracheal collapse
Not every Chihuahua will have these. Good breeders screen for inherited conditions, and your vet can advise on testing and check-ups.
