A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Born companions: bred as lap dogs for the British nobility, they are gentle, affectionate and adapt to most homes, from apartments to big families.
  • Still a spaniel: their sporting roots show in a love of chasing birds and butterflies, so a fenced yard or leash is wise outdoors.
  • Silky coat care: the medium-length coat with feathering on the ears, legs and feet sheds moderately and needs brushing a few times a week to stay tangle-free.
  • Not a guard dog: they tend to greet strangers as friends and are happiest with company, so they don't do well left alone for long stretches.
  • Easy to train: eager to please and food-motivated, they generally respond well to gentle, reward-based training.
