A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Ancient pasture dog: the national dog of Israel, developed to guard flocks and camps, they are alert and quick to sound the alarm.
  • Vocal guardian: they bark readily at anything unusual, so expect a dog that announces visitors.
  • Reserved with strangers: they are devoted and docile with family but aloof with newcomers, so socialization from puppyhood matters.
  • Easy coat: the double coat needs weekly brushing and sheds more heavily when the undercoat comes out.

Getting out with a Canaan Dog

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
