A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Scottish earthdog: bred to hunt foxes and vermin among rock piles, they love to dig and chase small animals.
  • Weatherproof coat: the shaggy double coat sheds little and needs weekly brushing and occasional hand-stripping.
  • Independent but fun: they are cheerful and curious, but have a mind of their own, so consistent training helps.
  • Keep them secure: they need a fenced yard or leash, since prey drive and curiosity can lead them off.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Cairn Terrier

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
