A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Belgian farm dog: bred to drive cattle, pull carts and guard the farm, they are strong, steady and protective.
  • Rough double coat: the tousled coat needs regular brushing and periodic trimming to prevent mats, beard and all.
  • Needs work: they are intelligent and need daily exercise and training to stay well behaved.
  • Loyal guardian: they are devoted to their family and can be reserved with strangers, so early socialization matters.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Bouvier des Flandres

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
