A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Night hunter: bred to trail and tree raccoons, they have a strong nose and prey drive and may chase small animals.
  • Vocal hound: they have a loud, bawling bark and bay that carries, which is worth thinking about with close neighbors.
  • Needs exercise: they need plenty of activity, and a fenced yard or leash is essential because they will follow a scent away.
  • Easy coat: the short, glossy coat needs only occasional brushing.

Getting out with a Bluetick Coonhound

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
