A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Nose above all: bred to follow human and animal scent trails, they will follow a smell anywhere, so keep them on leash or behind a secure fence.
  • Built for scenting: long ears and loose facial skin are thought to help gather scent near the nose, and those ears need regular cleaning.
  • Drool and bay: expect slobber, especially after drinking, and a deep baying voice when they are excited or on a trail.
  • Gentle but stubborn: they are usually patient and friendly, but can be independent, so training needs patience and good rewards.

Getting out with a Bloodhound

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
