A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Bred to tree raccoons: they follow a scent trail for long distances, so a secure fence and a leash outdoors are a must.
  • Famous voice: they "bay" with a deep, ringing call when on a scent, which can carry far and bother close neighbors.
  • Easygoing at home: they are usually mellow and friendly indoors, but need regular long walks or runs to stay content.
  • Nose-first training: once on a trail they can tune you out, so patient, reward-based training and a solid recall take work.

Getting out with a Black and Tan Coonhound

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
