A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Mountain herder: developed in the Italian Alps to move and guard flocks, they think for themselves and are patient but protective with their people.
  • A felted coat: their coat of three hair types forms flat mats called "flocks," which an owner separates by hand once, around the first year.
  • Low-fuss once flocked: the mature coat doesn't shed, needs no brushing and only rare baths.
  • Smart and devoted: they are eager to please but have a strong sense of their own, so calm, consistent training works best.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Bergamasco Sheepdog

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
