A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Herding at heart: bred in Belgium to herd and guard sheep, they are alert, quick and like to keep an eye on everything going on around them.
  • Needs a job: they are high-energy and bright, and do best with daily exercise plus training, dog sports or other work to keep their minds busy.
  • Thick double coat: the long outer coat sheds steadily and heavily during seasonal blowouts, so plan on regular brushing, more during shedding season.
  • Devoted but watchful: they bond closely with their family and are often reserved with strangers, so early socialization matters.

Getting out with a Belgian Tervuren

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
