A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Rough-coated Belgian shepherd: one of four Belgian herding breeds, named after Laeken, near Brussels, and the only one with a rough, wiry coat.
  • Guarding heritage: besides herding, they were used to guard linen drying in fields, and they remain protective and watchful.
  • Wiry coat care: the tousled coat needs weekly brushing and occasional stripping, and it should not be clipped.
  • Need a job: intelligent and energetic, they need daily exercise and training to keep their minds busy.
  • Choose one person: affectionate with family, they often bond most strongly with one person and can be reserved with strangers.

Getting out with a Belgian Laekenois

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
