A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Scent hounds: their long ears and loose skin help stir up and hold scent, and once on a trail they can be single-minded.
  • Deep voice: they have a loud, deep bay that they may use when bored or following a scent.
  • Easygoing but stubborn: gentle and friendly with people and other dogs, but they may need patient, food-motivated training.
  • Ear care: their long ears drag and trap dirt and moisture, so check and clean them regularly.
  • Not built for jumping: their short legs and long backs mean stairs and jumps should be limited, especially for puppies.

Getting out with a Basset Hound

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
