A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Built for the water: developed in Wisconsin and Minnesota to retrieve waterfowl from small boats, they love to swim and retrieve.
  • Curly, water-resistant coat: the tight curls shed seasonally and need weekly brushing, plus occasional trimming to stay tidy.
  • Some voice: they can be vocal, which makes them alert watchdogs but may need work in quiet homes.
  • Active companions: they need daily exercise and enjoy jobs like fetching, swimming and hunting games.

Getting out with a American Water Spaniel

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
