A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Terrier at heart: developed in Louisiana from Rat Terriers, they keep a strong prey drive and often love to dig and chase small animals.
  • Skin care instead of brushing: hairless dogs need sun protection outdoors, and their bare skin benefits from regular gentle bathing.
  • Feels the cold: without fur, they get chilly quickly and need a sweater or coat in cold weather.
  • Two varieties: the breed comes in hairless and coated varieties, and the coated dogs have a short coat.
  • Playful and smart: energetic and inquisitive, they enjoy training, games and active time with their people.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a American Hairless Terrier

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
