A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Pack hounds: bred to hunt foxes in packs over long distances, they generally get along well with other dogs.
  • Endurance athletes: they have huge stamina and need a lot of exercise, such as long runs or hikes, to stay content.
  • Musical bay: they have a loud, melodic voice they use freely, especially when following a scent.
  • Nose first: their scenting instinct can override recall, so a leash or securely fenced area is important.
  • Low-maintenance coat: the short, hard coat needs only an occasional brushing.

Getting out with a American Foxhound

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
