A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Watchful and vocal: alert and wary of strangers, they make keen watchdogs and can be barkers without training.
  • Clever and eager: bright and quick to learn, they were popular in traveling circuses for their tricks, and they enjoy training and dog sports.
  • Fluffy shedding: the thick white double coat sheds a lot and needs brushing a couple of times a week, more during seasonal sheds.
  • A spitz, not a sled dog: despite the name, they descend from German spitz dogs brought to the US, and were never Eskimo sled dogs.
  • Need company: they bond closely with family and can become bored or noisy if left alone a lot.

Getting out with a American Eskimo Dog

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
