A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Night hunters: bred to trail raccoons and hold them up a tree from dusk to dawn, they have a powerful nose and strong prey drive.
  • A loud voice: they bay and bawl when on a scent, which neighbors may notice, so they suit homes where noise is less of an issue.
  • Need for exercise: athletic and tireless, they need long daily walks or runs, ideally with a chance to sniff and explore.
  • Leash or fence: once on a trail they may ignore recall, so keep them leashed or in a securely fenced area.
  • Easy coat: the short, hard coat needs only weekly brushing.

Getting out with a American English Coonhound

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
