A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Built to haul: bred to pull heavy sleds over long distances in the Arctic, they are powerful, strong pullers on a leash and need plenty of daily exercise.
  • Talkers, not barkers: they tend to "woo" and howl rather than bark, and they are friendly with people, so they make poor watchdogs.
  • Big shedders: the thick double coat sheds heavily, especially when they blow their undercoat twice a year.
  • Escape artists and diggers: many dig and roam, so a secure yard and supervision are important.
  • Cold-climate coat: they thrive in the cold and need shade, water and limited exertion in hot weather.

Getting out with a Alaskan Malamute

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
