A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Born guardians: bred in Japan to guard and hunt, they are loyal and protective of family and naturally wary of strangers.
  • Choosy with other dogs: many don't tolerate other dogs, especially of the same sex, so early socialization and careful introductions matter.
  • Heavy seasonal shedding: the thick double coat sheds steadily and "blows" heavily a couple of times a year, when daily brushing helps.
  • Quiet and dignified: they rarely bark without reason, and they do best with an experienced owner who trains with calm consistency.
  • Cold-weather dogs: their dense coat suits cold climates, so take it easy with exercise in hot weather.

Getting out with a Akita

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
