A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • The "King of Terriers": the largest of the terriers, they were developed in Yorkshire's Aire Valley to hunt otters and rats, and they love to swim.
  • Busy minds: clever and energetic, they get bored easily and need daily exercise and games or training to stay out of mischief.
  • Wiry coat care: the hard double coat sheds little but needs weekly brushing and periodic hand-stripping or clipping.
  • Terrier instincts: many like to dig and chase small animals, and they can be strong-willed, so firm, fun, consistent training works best.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Airedale Terrier

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
