A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Sighthound chasers: bred to hunt by sight across rough mountain terrain, they will bolt after anything that runs, so a secure fence or a leash is a must.
  • High-maintenance coat: the long, silky coat tangles easily and needs thorough brushing and regular baths to stay mat-free.
  • Independent thinkers: dignified and aloof, they often decide for themselves whether to obey, so training takes patience and positive methods.
  • Bursts of speed: they need regular chances to run flat out in a safely enclosed area, plus daily walks.

Getting out with a Afghan Hound

They need daily exercise beyond a stroll: longer trails, games of fetch and time to run at the park.
