A guide for a healthy adult. Puppies, older dogs and flat-faced breeds in the heat need less.

Good to know

  • Bred as ratters: they were first kept to catch rats and mice in stables and kitchens, and still have a bold terrier-like streak and a taste for chasing small things.
  • Big attitude in a small dog: confident and fearless, they will stand up to much larger dogs, so keep an eye on park introductions.
  • Wiry coat, light shedding: the rough coat sheds little but needs regular brushing and occasional hand-stripping or trimming to keep its shaggy, tidy look.
  • Monkey-like expression: the name means "monkey terrier" in German, a nod to their whiskery, comical faces.
  • A low-shedding coat. Some people with allergies find that easier to live with, but no breed is allergen-free.

Getting out with a Affenpinscher

Daily walks and some play keep them content. A mix of park time and easy trails suits them.
